I-Cord Cast On

The I-Cord Cast On is one of my favorite trimming techniques. There are variations on how this cast on is made. This tutorial lays out how to seamlessly transition from the I-Cord Cast On into an I-Cord Selvedge beginning with the Crochet Chain Provisional Cast On. When you remove the scrap yarn from the provisional cast on, it releases live stitches; those 3 stitches are placed on the needle for the I-Cord Selvedge edge. Check out the video below for a how-to.

Make I-Cord

Step 1: Using the Crochet Chain Provisional Cast On and double pointed needles, cast on 3 stitches. Check out this video for a full tutorial on this provisional cast on - https://www.brandicheyenneharper.com/crochet-chain-provisional-cast-on

Step 2: Slide the stitches to the other end of the needle with right side facing. Without turning the needle, place the needle in your left hand. Pulling the yarn from behind, knit the 3 stitches. Pull the yarn snug when knitting the first stitch to neaten the I-Cord joining point.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for as many rows as specified in the pattern.

Pick up stitches along the I-Cord

Step 4: Slip the 3 working stitches onto a needle. Pick up and knit into the top half of the first stitch of each row along the I-Cord.

Step 5: Carefully remove the scrap yarn from the provisional cast on.

Step 6: Slip the 3 live stitches onto the right hand needle with the purl side facing you and working yarn in front.

This I-Cord Cast On method sets you up to flow effortlessly into a built-in I-Cord Selvedge edge on each side of your knitting!
